The registered psychiatric nurses (RPN) provides nursing care in the field of mental health. RPNs work with clients and families on issues related to emotional and mental well being, psychiatric disorders and developmental and/or cognitive difficulties. The role of the RPN is to assist clients to function at their maximum potential. This is achieved through the RPN assessing needs, assisting in the development of coping skills, providing teaching and counseling, and creating, implementing and evaluating mental health programs. RPNs utilize their specialized expertise in long term care facilities, mental health clinics, youth custody facilities, correctional facilities, community clinics, personal care homes, crisis centers, psychosocial rehabilitative clinics and in general hospitals.
